Y5 Evacuate to the Safety of the Countryside

Our visit to Murton Park for the World War II Day was led by three costumed members of the Living History team. The children dressed up beautifully in period costume and all played the part of evacuees experiencing life away from home, family and friends for the first time.

On arrival we were met by the Evacuation Co-ordinator. Her initial job was to confirm the details of the day with the evacuation members of staff. The children were then welcomed, shown to the toilets and given an initial safety briefing and orientation talk to set the scene for their day.

In groups, the children (and adults) performed a variety of tasks in both the farmhouse kitchen and in identified and supervised areas of the site, which had every facility required to make the visit as credible and realistic as possible. As well as domestic tasks, which included baking, doing the weekly wash with posser and mangle, the children were also given a go at making rag rugs (make-do and mend). Under the direction of the ARP Warden, they practiced gas-mask and air-raid drill. Under his direction they also learned about The Blitz and carried out incendiary bomb drill.
Emphasis was placed throughout the day on the use of role-play and scenarios to support the learning experience.

Y6 visit the Lifewise Centre for Crucial Crew Activities

The Lifewise centre, located at the Magna Centre in Rotherham, was launched in 2005. Since then it has become the focal point for much of the county's community safety training involving engagement with members of the public.

crucial

Lifewise aims to promote community safety and positive citizenship across South Yorkshire by providing a realistic and exciting environment in which groups of people can act out particular situations in a realistic setting. By confronting and dealing with a variety of issues and problems, it is hoped that our Year 6 Pupils will be better equipped to apply those lessons to real life.

Year 5 visit Bewerley Park

In January Year 5 visited the Bewerley Park Outdoor Education Centre – and won a big pat on the back.

All of the staff involved with this trip were very complimentary about the Hill House children. They were polite, hard-working and sensible for the whole week.

Bewerley Park lies in the heart of the Nidderdale AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), just outside the Dales market town of Pateley Bridge, near Harrogate. The surrounding area includes the Yorkshire Dales National Park and contains magnificent moorland, gritstone and limestone scenery, rivers, reservoirs and small lakes, lending itself to the provision of a wide variety of outdoor activities.

This has been our fifth visit to the Centre and every year we have experienced friendly, welcoming staff who deliver a programme of activities in a very professional manner. Over the course of the week we see the children grow in independence and determination whilst having a fun, rewarding and educational experience.

Year 5 Tudor Day at Hill House

Year 5 enjoyed a day in Cusworth Library with Master David who visited us from the 16th Century. They went to school in a Tudor School - with Tudor rules! Master David made sure that all of the pupils realised exactly what life was like in Tudor times for the general public in what can only be described as a 'Horrible Histories' style. A style that seemed to greatly appeal to Year 5. Please click here to see photos of the day.

Lizzie and Spyro are the school bearded dragons. Adult bearded dragons can reach approximately 45-60 cm from head to tail and live for up to fifteen years. When threatened, they will expand a spiny pouch under their jaw, as well as inhale air and puff up to make them appear larger. The pouch resembles a beard, lending the animal their name.

Ours arrived in May 2006 when they were about 8cm long. Since then they have grown dramatically and can be found lurking in the tank in Middle School. They are extremely friendly, love to be handled, and enjoy treats of peeled grapes pieces, melon, tomatoes and locusts!
