Interactive to the I-Max Year Three had a fantastically interactive time at the Bradford Media Museum. The children were able to consolidate their understanding of light; which links to their science topic from the Lent term. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about space exploration in the I-Max Cinema; which will give them a good grounding for our creative week later on this term.
Evacuation Day for Year 5 Year Five were evacuated to Murton Park as part of their World War II studies in History. The pupils all got into the war-time spirit by dressing in authentic clothing for the day and delighting their parents with a tearful but excited farewell. At Hill House, before leaving, they were issued with Name Tags, Ration Cards and Identity Cards. Some of the children even remembered their Respirators. On arriving at Murton Park the evacuees were met by the local (and strict) Evacuation Officer, Miss Bird (or Miss ‘B’ as she preferred to be called). They were divided up into four groups, each group sitting at a designated table. Year Five were then treated to a very informative talk about the start of the war, the types of shelters that were used and why children were evacuated to the countryside. The talk was interrupted by the rather grand arrival of the A.R.P. (Air Raid Precautions) Warden. Everyone was made aware that Mr Hunt (Mr ‘H’) was obviously the most important person that they would come across during the day and that they needed to listen very carefully to him if they were to survive the war! Mr H introduced the role play, craft activities and scenarios that were used to create a realistic, unforgettable experience for the children. They were taken to the kitchen to wash some clothes using a ‘Dolly’; a pole with one end the shape of a cone to agitate the water with the clothes in. They also had to clean some horse tack, put ‘Shock Tape’ onto the windows, make some butter and cook some flapjack using only rationed ingredients. After working in the kitchen the children then had to make some ‘Rag-Rugs’ followed by writing a postcard home to reassure worried parents about their well-being. Most of the children enjoyed joining the Fire Guard where they were told about ‘Propaganda’ and got up close to some bombs that would have been dropped by the Nazi bombers. One such bomb needed to be ‘Made-Safe’ by the new recruits who were taught how to successfully use a Stirrup-Pump. At the end of a long, tiring, inspiring and enjoyable day the children were reminded that they were very lucky as most of them would have relatives that were alive during the war and that they might be prepared to share their experiences with them if they asked nicely. Year 6 are the 'Crucial Crew' On Thursday 28th April Year Six visited Crucial Crew. Crucial Crew is a workshop held by South Yorkshire Police at the Life Wise Centre, on the Magna site, in Rotherham. At the workshop the children are presented with a series of dangerous and challenging situations, during which they engage in role-play activities to teach them how to cope.6 scenarios are played out on a mock up of a street in Rotherham. They all grabbed the children’s attention and included:
The visit was very worth while and presented much food for thought and issues to be discussed further, back in the classroom... Year 6 behaved impeccably and the instructors commented on how well they had listened and taken part. Year 3 'Rock' Mr Walter, a prominent Author, Cartographer and Geologist, spent the morning with Year 3. The pupils had a fantastic time categorising rocks, sieving soil, sorting particles, finding fossils in clay and drawing rocks and fossils.
Mr Walter was able to make Geology 'come alive' and provided exciting tasks for the children to extend their understanding whilst completing the set challenges. Hill House thanks Mr Walters for giving up his time, a great time was had by all involved. Please click here to see photos. Year 6 Enjoy a Week in The Lake District Year 6 spent a week in Coniston, Cumbria developing their respect for nature by taking part in team-building activities and geographical studies. The highlights of the trip were the wonderful activities that had been arranged by Real Adventure. The children spent a day on each of the activities that included: a River Study, Canoeing, Ghyll Scrambling and Tunnel Exploring in a disused slate mine now owned by the National Trust.
The children stayed in St. Andrew's Youth Hostel, in the middle of Coniston, where they learned how to look after their kit, keep their rooms tidy and were very keen on taking it in turns to wash up after meals.
An exhausting week came to a conclusion with a Red Nose Day Talent Show on the last night. Everyone was treated to comedy, quiz shows and some wonderful singing by the children.
Well done to all Year 6 children for making the week so special for the teachers. Everyone had a great time and we all thank Dan and his team for giving us a 'Real Adventure'.
