Lower School Summer Production

This week the children in Lower School have performed to parents and friends the delightful story of Tattybogle.

It is the story of a friendly scarecrow who loved everything, even the crows.

Then, one day, the autumn wind was so strong that Tattybogle was blown to pieces. All that was left of him was an old stick, but he never lost hope. Spring turned out to be the start of a glorious new life for him as his stick took root and he became a tree.

The confidence shown by the children was amazing! A special thank you to all the parents who helped with the costumes and to Mrs Gutowski and Miss Paige who transformed the characters with their wonderful face painting.

Well Done Everyone!

Lions and Tigers and...Wallabies, Oh My!

Reception kicked off their Wild Animals topic with a fun-packed trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.  They got glimpses of the young wallabies snuggling inside their mother’s pouches; dodged the energetic lemurs and were lucky enough to see the Park’s new tiger take a dip in its pool.

After lunch, the children took part in a workshop where they were given the opportunity to handle a lizard and a snake. They were very brave!

Year 2 on the Trains

Having spent the term studying the history of trains, Year Two visited the National Railway Museum in York. They had a wonderful time exploring the exhibits, dressing up as Victorian travellers and learning all about train travel.

The day began and finished with a train ride from Doncaster Station to York, which the children found very exciting. Thank you to all the parents who came to help, making our day so much fun.

Pizza! Pizza!

Reception visited Pizza Express as part of their Food topic.

The children were given a behind the scenes tour where they experienced the walk in refrigerators, safe and food lifts. Then they were let loose in the kitchen!

They each made a pizza from scratch, learning how to knead and shape the dough and add the toppings.  The end results were a delicious treat for all!

Hill House Royal Wedding

The day before Prince William and Catherine Middleton walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey, another bride and groom were experiencing the nerves and excitement, as the Lower School held their very own mock wedding celebration.

Alexandra Park and Jack Feather, the Bride and Groom, were “married” by the Reverend Paul Witts from St. Mary the Virgin Church in South Elmsall in the Master Hall, surrounded by their friends and teachers.

It was a very moving ceremony, as Rueben Narwal nervously walked Alexandra to meet the groom and best man Jenson Cull, followed by the chief bridesmaid Grace Thomas and the beautiful flower girls: Sophie Tang, Holly Usher, Charlotte  Ashworth and Isabelle Cutts. The very smart pageboys were Davis Storey, William Messham, Ryan Alahakon  and Mahesh Nimmagadda. The big event followed a week of royal wedding-related work, which the children have found both fun and educational.

Year 1 Pilgrim Fathers

Year 1 spent the day in Austerfield, birthplace of William Bradford - Pilgrim Father, to learn about the voyage made by 35 members of the English Separatist Church to America.

Our Toy Story at Cusworth Hall

Reception took a step back in time to kick-start their new History topic about Toys.  They visited Cusworth Hall to explore a selection of toys from the past, and proved to be far better at using a whip and top than their teachers!

The children also dressed up in Victorian clothing to investigate the Hall itself.  The children had a fantastic day and loved learning about all the different toys.

Bethlehem Buzzin'

The atmosphere was definitely buzzing in school yesterday when the Lower School performed their Christmas Nativity to delighted parents and relatives.

The play, which is a  witty yet sensitive adaptation of the traditional Nativity story, is a delightful reminder of the true message of Christmas. The confidence of all the children and being able to perform in front of a large audience was a delight to see.

Well done to the school staff who worked hard to get children onto the stage at the right time, carrying the correct prop. A special mention must go to Mr Lane for his musical talents, creating such a wonderful experience for us all to enjoy.

The final word must go to the children who have worked very hard over the last few weeks.

Y1 Pedestrian Training

The training given to the children at Hill House is designed to develop good behaviour patterns that will become habitual and so keep them safe. Children are taught practical pedestrian skills at the roadside by trained parent/carers, trainers and school staff, rather than in the classroom.

This encourages the children to think about solutions to road safety problems such as the brow of a hill, parked cars and bends in the road which cause obstructions to their view.

The children were very well-behaved and got a lot out of the day. Thank you to all involved for making the day so special.
